(Los Angeles) – The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works Graffiti Abatement Program is showcasing the “Difference Between Art and Graffiti” with a series of events that include a design contest for a NASCAR racing car.
The “Difference Between Art and Graffiti” program seeks out gifted young artists and offers them competitions, art classes, trips to art museums and workbook materials to help them define the difference between art and graffiti for their neighborhoods and peers. Last year, the Difference Between Art and Graffiti” sponsored Art in the Park, presented in association with the Department of Parks and Recreation which featured exhibitors, food, entertainment and a free art contest for young artists, 25 years of age and younger. Artists competed to place their designs on a NASCAR racecar driven by Kevin Conway that raced at the California Speedway in April. Kira Banos won the contest which was judged by a combined panel of art museum staff, art instructors and professional artists representing institutions such as the County of Los Angeles Arts Commission, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Petersen Automotive Museum.
This year, the “Difference Between Art and Graffiti” will be visiting elementary schools along with the T.A.G. – Totally Against Graffiti mobile classroom, sponsoring coloring contests for kids featuring the T.A.G. characters - TAGMan and TAGDude – along with positive messages regarding reporting graffiti. Children are taught to report graffiti by calling a toll free number - 1-800-675-4357. Graffiti can usually be removed within 48 hours of being reported.
The Difference Between Art and Graffiti and T.A.G. – Totally Against Graffiti are sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
